Introduction
Every wing has its own rhythm. It's not just about opening and closing—it's about how the layers respect each other. How the smaller feathers hide under the larger ones when the wing is resting, and how they reappear when it is fully expanded.
When creating the Lumirainyx mechanical wings, I wanted to achieve a movement that didn't feel like a machine, but like a gesture. And that's where the idea of using blind system.
Why blinds?
The principle of the blind is simple but ingenious. Each element has its own attachment point, its own angle and its own role. When one moves, the others follow in precise order.
In wings, this means:
- smaller feathers naturally slide under larger ones,
- the layers do not flip,
- movement is smooth and controlled,
- The sash holds its shape in both the open and closed positions.
It is a mechanic that respects aesthetics.
Sewing feathers: combining strength and flexibility
The base is a denim cover that serves as a base layer. I gradually sewed blue and white EVA foam feathers onto it.
Each feather has:
- a solid stitch in the root,
- looser fit in the toe,
- precisely determined overlap angle.
This sewing method ensures that the feathers bend naturally as they move, but at the same time they hold their shape. The layers don't fray, fold, or fall apart—exactly what a mechanical wing needs.
Integration with mechanics
When I put the cover on the metal structure, it turned out that the system worked exactly as expected.
When closed, the wing appears compact, without deformation. When open, the feathers unfold into an elegant arc that appears almost organic.
Mechanics add strength. The lining adds shape. Feathers add life.
What this system means for Lumirainyx
A blind system is not just a technical solution. It is a philosophy of movement.
It shows that even a mechanical project can feel natural. That metal, fabric, and foam can come together to create something that breathes.
